First Severe Thunderstorm of 2009 for Western Massachusetts occured on May 9 at 2000. The majority of the line went just to the north. The video doesnt truly show how dark it got. Max tops for this storm reached 30000 ft. There was a report of a motorized hang glider crash on Mount Tom which is just to the north of this location in Holyoke and Easthampton, MA. Video was shot by me in Westfield, MA at Barnes Municipal Airport Observation Deck. I was using a FLIP mini video camera. In the background you can hear the Western Mass SKYWARN amatuer radio network…these are the people who provide the NWS with realtime weather conditions that they use to issue Severe Warnings.
